A long traditional boat-handling pole made from varnished pine, with a shaped grip and toe for controlled pushing-off and close-quarters manoeuvring.

Suitable for: canal boats, barges, narrowboats and other displacement craft when moving slowly near banks, locks, pontoons or shallow obstructions.

Selection and compatibility

• Confirm that 3.5m can be stored and handled safely on the vessel without obstructing walkways.
• Most useful at very low speed where the bottom, bank or structure can be reached safely.
• Do not use near propellers, rotating machinery, overhead power lines or live electrical equipment.
• The operator needs secure footing and must release the pole if it becomes trapped.
• Not a substitute for powered steering, mooring lines, a boat hook or approved rescue equipment.

Installation, use and care

• Inspect the timber, varnish, toe and handle before each use.
• Use with two hands from a stable position and push progressively rather than levering violently.
• Never wrap a line or body part around the pole.
• Wipe dry after use, store under cover and avoid prolonged standing water.
• Sand and re-varnish worn areas before moisture penetrates the timber.
