Improved slow-speed steering for inland-waterway boats

A bolt-on auxiliary rudder that increases steering effect around the outboard leg at low speed.

Designed for canal boats, river craft, fishing boats and displacement-speed leisure boats that need better manoeuvrability in locks, marinas and confined waterways without repeatedly increasing engine speed.

Technical and installation details

Product type Bolt-on long rudder / steering aid
Installation position Clamps around the outboard leg immediately above the anti-ventilation plate
Fastening Pre-drilled assembly supplied with bolts and nuts
Drilling of engine leg Not required when fitted as intended
Typical fitting time Approximately 10 minutes after compatibility has been confirmed
Primary use Low-speed manoeuvring on canals, rivers and in marinas
Construction Marine-grade metal assembly

Compatibility checks

  • Confirm there is sufficient straight, unobstructed clamping area above the anti-ventilation plate.
  • Check the rudder cannot touch the propeller, trim tab, water intakes, transom, hull or steering components through the full steering and tilt range.
  • Measure the engine-leg profile and compare it with the product images before ordering.
  • Not suitable for engines whose leg shape prevents secure and level clamping.
  • Use only at displacement and manoeuvring speeds; it is not designed for high-speed planing operation.

Fitting and use

  • Position the two halves evenly around the leg and tighten the fasteners progressively.
  • Do not drill, grind or modify the outboard casing.
  • Turn the steering fully from lock to lock and operate trim/tilt carefully to confirm clearance.
  • Recheck fastener security after the first use and at regular service intervals.
  • Remove the rudder if there is vibration, movement, contact or any sign of unsafe loading.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit every outboard motor?

No. Leg profile, available clamping area and clearances differ between manufacturers and models. Compare measurements and photographs before ordering.

Does it require drilling into the outboard?

No. It is designed as a clamp-on, pre-drilled assembly.

Can it be used at planing speed?

No. It is intended for low-speed manoeuvring on canals, rivers and in marinas.

Does it replace the boat's normal steering system?

No. It supplements the existing steering effect; the original steering system must remain safe and fully functional.

For the products under £150 the shipping is £6.99.
