Lalizas ESCAPE-15 Emergency Escape Breathing Device – 15 Minute EEBD
A SOLAS/MED-MER emergency escape breathing device supplying a steady flow of compressed air through a universal full-face hood. Designed for rapid evacuation from smoke, toxic gas or oxygen-deficient areas aboard commercial vessels.
Purpose and Correct Application
- Escape from machinery spaces, accommodation areas and other shipboard compartments affected by smoke or hazardous atmosphere.
- Commercial ships operating under SOLAS requirements, subject to the vessel’s approved fire-control and safety plan.
- Fast deployment by trained crew using a single activation action.
Critical limitation: an EEBD is for escape only. It must not be used for firefighting, tank entry, rescue entry or routine work in a hazardous atmosphere. Those tasks require the correctly rated self-contained breathing apparatus and trained personnel.
Safety and Operating Features
- 15-minute nominal steady airflow with sufficient delivery rate for emergency escape.
- Universal-size full-face hood suitable for a broad range of face shapes.
- Elastic, non-irritant neoprene neck seal.
- Flame-resistant construction with silver finish to reflect heat and improve visibility.
- Pressure gauge positioned for rapid visual cylinder-status checks.
- Single-action activation for fast deployment under emergency conditions.
- Refillable compressed-air cylinder using an EU-standard G 5/8-inch charging thread.

Installation, Inspection and Service
Position the EEBD at the locations identified in the vessel’s approved safety plan, with clear signage and unobstructed access. Crew must receive familiarisation training using the manufacturer’s instructions and dedicated training procedures; do not discharge operational units for practice.
Before each voyage or scheduled inspection, check the cylinder-pressure indication, tamper seals, hood, neck seal, hose, activation components, case or packaging and cylinder manufacture/service dates.
Compressed-air charging, cylinder testing and repair must be carried out by competent authorised personnel using breathing-quality air and the applicable maritime servicing procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can this be used to enter a smoke-filled engine room?
No. It is an escape-only EEBD and is not a substitute for a SOLAS-approved SCBA used by trained firefighting or rescue teams.
Does “15 minutes” guarantee 15 minutes in every situation?
It is the nominal rated airflow duration. Actual escape planning must account for route length, user condition, temperature and other emergency factors; evacuation should begin immediately.
Is the hood sized for one particular wearer?
No. The full-face hood and elastic neck seal use a universal-size design, but crew training and correct donning remain essential.
Can the cylinder be refilled?
Yes, the standard unit uses a refillable cylinder with a G 5/8-inch charging connection. Refilling and testing must be completed by competent authorised personnel.
How is shelf life calculated?
For the standard steel-cylinder model, Lalizas states 10 years from the cylinder’s manufacture date. Applicable inspection, hydrostatic-test, flag-state and service rules may require action sooner.
Is an alarm whistle included?
Lalizas lists the low-air alarm as an available option. Do not assume it is fitted unless it is shown on the supplied product documentation.
