How do I know if it is compatible?

If your helm pump or reservoir specifies SeaStar or Hynautic fluid, or references the MIL-H-5606 standard, this is the correct oil for your application.

Can I use standard Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) instead?

While ATF (Dexron II) can be used in an absolute emergency, it is not recommended for permanent use. ATF does not contain the same anti-foaming agents and can lead to seal swelling or stiff steering over time.

Note: Proper bleeding of the hydraulic system is required after refilling. Always consult your owner's manual for specific filling instructions.
