Multiflex Mechanical Steering Kit up to 150HP - 16ft Cable
A complete single-station mechanical rotary steering kit for a single outboard engine rated up to 150HP. This version includes a fixed-length 16ft (4.88m) Multiflex SC-16 steering cable and a Multiflex W1B Alpha black steering wheel. Measure the required route before ordering because steering cables cannot be shortened.
Kit contents
- Multiflex H1 Planetary 150 steering helm
- Multiflex SC-16-16 steering cable, 16ft (4.88m)
- Multiflex B1B bezel kit
- Multiflex W1B Alpha black three-spoke steering wheel, 350mm diameter, with integral hub
Not included: any engine-specific steering link arm or mounting parts not listed above.
Key features
- Designed for single-outboard applications up to 150HP, subject to the boat manufacturer's rating and the installation conditions
- Planetary rotary mechanical steering system
- Compact H1 planetary helm with a high-pressure die-cast aluminium-alloy cover
- Powder-coated helm cover for improved corrosion resistance
- Galvanised steel helm shaft with a standard 3/4 inch taper
- Multiflex W1B Alpha black steering wheel made from high-strength engineering plastic, with three-spoke design and integral hub
- SC-16 cable with stainless-steel output ends
- Minimum permitted cable bend radius: 8 inches (approximately 200mm)
- SC-16 cable exceeds ISO 8848 and ISO 9775 standards
- Fixed 16ft cable length; the final two digits in SC-16-16 identify the length in feet

How to measure the steering cable
Measure the intended cable route in centimetres with the engine centred:
- A: from the centre line of the steering wheel or helm to the gunwale, or to the deck if the cable runs downwards.
- B: along the intended route from the console or dash to the transom.
- C: from the gunwale to the centre line of the cable connection on the engine.
- Add A + B + C, then subtract 10cm for every 90-degree bend in the route.
- For a cable passing through the engine tilt tube, add 30.5cm. For transom-support or splashwell mounting, do not add this extra 30.5cm.
- Divide the result by 30.5 to convert centimetres to feet, then always round up to the next whole foot.
Example: A = 100cm, B = 200cm and C = 60cm, with two 90-degree bends. The base measurement is 360cm minus 20cm = 340cm. For tilt-tube mounting, add 30.5cm: 370.5cm divided by 30.5 = 12.15, so select a 13ft cable. For transom-support or splashwell mounting, 340cm divided by 30.5 = 11.15, so select a 12ft cable.
If replacing an existing Multiflex cable, first inspect the jacket for its reference. In SC-16-XX, the XX identifies the cable length in feet. Re-measure the complete route if the marking is missing or the routing will change.
Installation and safety notes
- Horsepower alone does not determine suitability. Hull design, boat speed, engine torque and steering loads must also be considered.
- Do not exceed the boat manufacturer's engine-power or steering-system limits.
- Keep bends to a minimum and never route the cable tighter than the 8-inch minimum bend radius.
- Before use, confirm unrestricted movement from full port to full starboard without binding or stretching the cable.
- Mechanical steering components are not repairable. Replace any cable that is damaged, stiff, corroded or has reduced travel.
- Installation and final safety checks should be completed by a suitably qualified marine technician.
Frequently asked questions
Does this kit include a steering wheel?
Yes. The kit includes the Multiflex W1B Alpha black three-spoke steering wheel shown in the product images. It has a 350mm diameter, an integral hub and fits the included standard 3/4 inch tapered helm shaft.
Does it include the engine steering link arm?
No engine-specific link arm is listed in the kit contents. Check the engine and mounting arrangement and obtain the correct connection hardware separately if required.
Can the 16ft cable be shortened?
No. Mechanical steering cables are sealed, fixed-length components and must not be cut or modified.
Can I choose the kit using engine horsepower only?
No. The 150HP figure is the manufacturer's maximum stated rating, but the boat rating, hull, speed and steering loads must also be suitable.
Is this a hydraulic steering system?
No. This is a mechanical rotary helm-and-cable system.
Can the cable be routed around tight corners?
No. Use the smoothest possible route and maintain at least an 8-inch, approximately 200mm, bend radius.
Which cable length should I order if my calculation falls between two sizes?
Round up to the next whole foot. A cable that is too short can bind or restrict engine movement.
