Overview
Ignition-protected marine starter motor for selected GM-based MerCruiser, OMC and Volvo Penta sterndrive and inboard engines. The compact permanent-magnet gear-reduction design provides high cranking torque and replaces certain older direct-drive starter configurations when the mounting and OEM references match.
Technical specifications
| Application | Selected petrol marine inboard and sterndrive engines |
| Voltage | 12V DC |
| Rated output | Approximately 1.4kW |
| Starter design | Permanent-magnet gear reduction (PMGR) |
| Pinion | 11 teeth |
| Rotation | Clockwise to the replacement manufacturer's convention |
| Mounting | Straight-bolt pattern; compare bolt spacing and starter nose |
| Marine safety | Ignition-protected design for petrol-engine compartments; installation must maintain SAE J1171 requirements |
| Package | One new aftermarket starter motor; solenoid and mounting hardware not included unless integrated or expressly shown |
Engine compatibility and OEM references
- MerCruiser: selected GM 181cu in 3.0L / 3.0LX applications, typically around 1990-1998.
- OMC: selected 2.5L, 3.0L and certain 4.3L marine applications, typically around 1984-1996.
- Volvo Penta: selected 3.0GL / 3.0GS applications, typically around 1993-1999, plus specific AQ/BB installations only by original-part match.

Engine displacement and appearance alone are not enough. Confirm engine model, serial number, original starter number, bolt pattern and flywheel engagement.
Installation and pre-fit checks
- Disconnect and isolate the battery before removal.
- Compare voltage, pinion tooth count, rotation convention, mounting pattern, nose length and terminal position with the original starter.
- Load-test the battery and check positive and earth-cable voltage drop, solenoid output and flywheel ring-gear condition.
- Clean the mounting face and tighten bolts and cable terminals to the engine manufacturer's specification.
- Confirm smooth engagement and immediate disengagement after installation. Avoid prolonged or repeated continuous cranking.
Frequently asked questions
Q1. Will this fit every MerCruiser 3.0L engine?
No. MerCruiser used different starter arrangements. Match the engine serial number, original reference, straight-bolt pattern and 11-tooth pinion.
Q2. Can it replace an older large direct-drive starter?
Only where the OEM cross-reference and mounting geometry confirm the compact PMGR replacement.
Q3. Is it safe for a petrol marine engine compartment?
It is an ignition-protected marine design, but correct installation, cable protection and compartment compliance must be maintained.
Q4. What should be checked before fitting?
Test the battery, cables, earth path, solenoid and ring gear so an external fault does not damage the replacement starter.
