Marine starter for selected OMC, MerCruiser and Cobra stern-drive engines
A 12V marine ignition-protected replacement starter for selected older petrol inboard and stern-drive applications. This compact PMGR unit uses clockwise rotation and a 9-tooth pinion and replaces specific Delco-pattern starters listed below.
Best used for: starter replacement on compatible older sterndrives, inboards, motor cruisers, sports boats and petrol-powered marine generator installations.
Technical specification
| System voltage | 12V |
| Rotation | Clockwise (CW) |
| Pinion | 9 teeth |
| Starter design | Permanent-magnet gear reduction (PMGR) |
| Rated output | Approximately 1.4kW |
| Application | Marine ignition-protected petrol-engine installation |

Engine compatibility and applications
- Selected MerCruiser 5.7L MIE applications, approximately 1988-1996, using a listed OEM starter.
- Selected MerCruiser 7.4L MIE/Borg Warner and Gen V LH applications, approximately 1988-1996, where rotation and mounting match.
- Selected OMC/Cobra installations originally using OMC 980821, 981289 or 982202.
- Selected Crusader, Pleasurecraft and Volvo Penta installations using the cross-references below.
- Selected Westerbeke 6.5 TWG, 8.0 TWG and 11.0 TWG applications from the stated older generations where OEM 33486 and all dimensions match.
- Not the common later 11-tooth PG260 design; engine displacement alone does not establish compatibility.
Compatibility rule: model and horsepower are not sufficient on their own. Confirm the engine year/serial range, electrical specification, pinion, rotation, mounting points and an OEM reference before ordering.
OEM references, checks and installation
- Delco: 10455600, 10455601, 1108525, 1109484, 1998315, 1998599.
- Mercury/Mariner: 50-65785A1, 50-79604A1, 50-79604A3, 50-97499A2.
- OMC: 980821, 981289, 982202.
- Volvo Penta: 841377; Westerbeke: 33486.
- Never substitute an automotive starter: the replacement must be suitable for a marine petrol-engine compartment.
Before fitting: isolate the battery, photograph and label the cables, compare the old and new units side by side, inspect the flywheel ring gear and clean the electrical connections.
Installation: use the engine manufacturer's torque procedure and reconnect cables with clean, tight terminals. Professional installation is recommended for marine starting systems.
Package contents: one new replacement starter motor. Mounting hardware and cables are not included unless visible and explicitly stated.
Frequently asked questions
Why must this be a marine starter?
Petrol-engine compartments require an ignition-protected marine unit. A visually similar automotive starter is not an acceptable substitute.
Will it fit any 5.7L or 7.4L marine engine?
No. Displacement is not enough; rotation, tooth count, nose/register, bolt pattern and an OEM reference must all match.
How do I distinguish it from the later design?
This unit is a 12V clockwise PMGR starter with a 9-tooth pinion. It is not the common later 11-tooth PG260 type.
What information should I provide if unsure?
Send the engine make, complete model/serial, the number on the old starter and clear photographs of the mounting face, pinion and terminals.
Important: OEM names and part numbers are supplied only as compatibility references. This is a replacement component unless the listing explicitly states otherwise.
