Overview

High-torque gear-reduction starter for selected Mercury and Mariner Optimax, DFI, Pro XS, racing and Sport Jet two-stroke powerheads. It uses a 14-tooth pinion and must be selected by exact engine family, serial number and original Mercury reference rather than horsepower alone.

Confirm the complete model and serial range, 14-tooth gear, mounting and original reference. Not every 75-300HP Mercury uses this starter.

Installation and pre-fit checks

  • Disconnect and isolate the battery before removal.
  • Compare voltage, pinion tooth count, rotation convention, mounting pattern, nose length and terminal position with the original starter.
  • Load-test the battery and check positive and earth-cable voltage drop, solenoid output and flywheel ring-gear condition.
  • Clean the mounting face and tighten bolts and cable terminals to the engine manufacturer's specification.
  • Confirm smooth engagement and immediate disengagement after installation. Avoid prolonged or repeated continuous cranking.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Does it fit carburetted Mercury two-strokes?
Not automatically. This starter is primarily associated with selected Optimax/DFI families; verify the original reference and serial range.

Q2. Will it fit every 75-300HP Mercury or Mariner?
No. Horsepower is only a guide; engine family, serial number, original part and 14-tooth configuration must match.

Q3. Is the external starter solenoid included?
No. The package contains the starter motor unless a separate solenoid is expressly shown and listed.

Q4. Why test the battery and cables first?
Low voltage and high cable resistance increase starter current and heat, causing slow cranking and premature failure.
