Choose oil by specification, not viscosity alone
Use the lubricant grade and approval specified by the engine, gearbox or steering-system manufacturer. Products with the same viscosity can have different additive packages and applications. Check the product page, equipment manual and original specification before ordering or mixing fluids.
- For 2-stroke outboards, check the required NMMA specification such as TC-W3.
- For 4-stroke engines, confirm viscosity and the required marine or manufacturer approval.
- For gearcases, trim and steering systems, use only the specified lubricant or compatible equivalent.
Marine oils FAQ
Can automotive engine oil be used in a boat engine?
Only where the engine manufacturer expressly permits the same specification. Marine engines can have different operating conditions and approval requirements.
Can different hydraulic or steering fluids be mixed?
Do not mix fluids unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility. If the existing fluid is unknown, consult the system manual or manufacturer before topping up.
