The Ultimate Outboard Winterization Checklist

Winterizing your outboard motor is an essential step to ensure that it remains in good condition during the off-season. Here is a checklist of things you should do to winterize your outboard motor:

  1. Inspect the ignition system: Check the distributor caps, rotors, points, and condensers for excess wear and deterioration.
  2. Inspect the electrical system: Check all electrical connections, wiring, lights, and fuses for proper operation and performance. Replace and repair as necessary.
  3. Change fuel water separating filters: Replace all fuel filters and use a fuel treatment designed for today’s ethanol-laden fuel.
  4. Fog engine cooling/drive systems: Remove the drive and inspect/replace the impeller. Check alignment/replace outdrive gaskets. Replace gear lube/inspect and replace drain plug gaskets as necessary. Inspect/replace anodes. Lubricate all applicable fittings.
  5. Inspect belts and hoses: Inspect all belts and hoses for cracks, swelling, or any other visible signs of fatigue.
  6. Flush engine with fresh water and drain: Inspect for leakage within the cooling system.
  7. Circulate antifreeze through engine block and manifolds.
